the cutest patient

In the ER after getting her IV put in

Hazel had been sick with a high fever {and no other symptoms} for eight days. We had taken her into the doctor's office twice and to the ER once. They took blood, a chest xray, a urine sample, and some mucus from her nose to check for viruses. Everything was coming back fine, but she was still sick and the doctors were perplexed. So, on Monday evening we took her back to the doctor. After a quick examination, the doc told us to go to the ER and get admitted to the hospital.

The ER doctor had told us very little about what was going on, but did mention that they were worried Hazel could have a rare disease called Kawasaki. We did all of the same tests over again, and after spending hours and hours at the ER they finally admitted us and walked us up to our room. I started to freak out a bit when they took us to the Cardiac Care Unit.

Because there is a small possibility that Hazel has Kawasaki, they needed to put us in the CCU so that they could monitor her heart. So far, they have pretty much ignored that and think that she has a urinary tract infection (even though a few days ago her urine was clear). We won't get the results back until tomorrow morning, and if she does not have a UTI, we are back at square one.

So, here it is, 11:15 pm, and we hopefully are on our last blood draw of the day in the next few minutes. Remember when I was worried about having a wiggly baby on an airplane for five hours? Hah! Having this wiggly and sick and whiny and all around sad baby hooked up with IVs and heart monitors and other sensors has been horrible. Horrible. And until they can rule out a virus, we are under quarantine, so anyone that comes into Hazel's room has to wear a gown, mask and gloves, and Hazel can't leave the room at all. We can't go to the playroom, we can't walk the halls to calm her down, we just have to stay in our room 24-7. Luckily, we do have a private room and a private bath, and enough room to put Hazel in her stroller and push her back and forth when she is inconsolable, but it sure would be nice to have a little more freedom.

Poor little Hazel. She has been such a trooper, and we just keep praying that the meds they have her on will work, her fever will go down, and she'll be able to beat this thing (whatever it is)!

If there's anything you need let me know. Been stuck in a hospital (it was only about 14 hours but still) and know how hard it is.

Prayers are with you.

Sara, just as a mom who's been through hospital and doctor stuff, let me tell you this. Trust your instinct, you're entitled to it as a mom, push for the tests or whatever it takes. I know you've dealt with crazy illnesses yourself and you are good at handling that kind of stuff. Just wanted to give you more encouragement to keep following your gut. I hope it all works out soon. Maybe she was just hoping to prolong the birthday celebrations...Love you!

Good luck! I've totally been there and it is no fun. Fortunately, for us after days (and hospitalizations, tests, terrifying possibilities, etc.) the fevers went away. Having a child hospitalized is just hard. Thinking of you!

Poor Hazel :( Kawasaki actually makes a lot of sense with the fever. Hopefully they will be able to figure out what is wrong with your darling soon!
